Discover the work of Youssef Kamel (1891–1971), one of the most important pioneers of Egyptian art and a leading figure of the early generation of Egyptian painters. Kamel was among the first graduates of Cairo’s School of Fine Arts and became an important figure in the development of modern Egyptian art.
An interesting part of Kamel’s personal story is that his three daughters went on to marry three prominent Egyptian artists: Hosni El-Bannani, Gamal El-Sagini, and Kamel Mostafa, connecting his family to several important figures in Egypt’s artistic history.
This painting is considered one of Kamel’s remarkable works, particularly for its use of bright, vivid colors, which were not as common during the period. The work depicts a young peasant woman, but leaves us wondering: is she Egyptian, or could she be a European peasant? This ambiguity adds another layer of intrigue to the painting and invites us to look more closely at the artist’s choices.
