Discover the work of the great Egyptian artist George Bahgoury, born in 1932. This painting dates from the 1990s and presents a fascinating composition that invites us to look beyond what we see at first glance.
In this striking work, we may see a face in profile, but it also represents a cello player. We can see his arm, his bow, and his head, while the instrument itself could be a cello — or perhaps a baby grand piano. Bahgoury began his artistic career as a caricaturist, or “caracture” artist, and his artistic journey eventually extended to Umm Kulthum.
What’s also worth mentioning is that Bahgoury leaves us space to imagine and understand what he means through his symbols, allowing each viewer to form their own interpretation of the work.
