Art… in a Minute
Brought to you by Dina Fahmy El Rouby

Discover the work of Mahmoud Said (1897–1964), one of the most prominent Egyptian artists of the modern era. Born in Alexandria into an aristocratic family, he studied law at the French School of Law in El-Mounira before pursuing his passion for art in Paris, where he was influenced by some of the leading artists of his time.

Mahmoud Said is celebrated for his portraits, landscapes, and depictions of Alexandrian women, including the famous women of the city’s popular neighborhoods.

The first painting, “Portrait de Mme Ahmed Pacha Mazloum,” depicts Malak Hanem, the wife of Ahmed Pacha Mazloum, Mahmoud Said’s uncle. She was also the aunt of Queen Farida, the first wife of King Farouk. In this classical portrait, she is portrayed wearing a medal, reflecting the elegance and status associated with her aristocratic background.

The second painting, “Le Port d’Alexandrie,” dates to 1919 and depicts Alexandria’s harbor. In this small work, Said demonstrates the influence of Impressionism through his treatment of the scene and his painterly approach.
